Ask most design and build companies how they started, and you’ll usually hear some version of the same story: a tradesman, often a carpenter or bricklayer, came off the tools and started a building company. Design gets added later, usually once the business has grown enough to justify an in-house designer or a partnership with one.
Stevens Design & Build didn’t start that way. Kevin’s background is in design and interiors, not on the tools, and that single difference shapes everything about how we work.
Design-Led Roots That Grew Into Building
Before Stevens Design & Build existed in its current form, Kevin’s career was built around design, not building:
- Studied for a BA (Hons) in 3D Design
- Began his career with a market-leading residential design company
- Became Design and Sales Manager for a family-run kitchen and interiors business
- Founded his own company, later formally registered as Stevens Design Refurbishment & Build Ltd
Building came later, once Kevin combined that design background with his own design and build company.
That order matters more than it might sound. Most design and build companies figure out how to make design fit around their existing building process. We never had that problem, because design was already the foundation before the building side was added on top.
What This Actually Means for Your Project
It’s easy for “design-led” to become a phrase that sounds good on a website without meaning very much in practice. Here’s what it actually changes:
- Full visualisation comes first, always. Every project starts with complete 2D plans and a full 3D visualisation, agreed and signed off before a single wall comes down or a single unit is ordered. You’re not imagining what your finished space will look like. You’re looking at it.
- The build follows the design, not the other way round. Because design leads, the building process exists to deliver exactly what was already agreed, rather than the design being squeezed in around however the build happens to be going.
- One team, one contract. Design and build companies that add design on afterwards often end up managing two separate relationships: one with a designer, one with a builder. Stevens Design & Build handles both under a single contract, with Kevin as your one point of contact from the first sketch to the final handover.
Why the Order You Start In Still Shows
You can usually tell which order a design and build company started in by looking at how they talk about a project. Building-first companies talk about materials, trades and timelines. Design-first companies talk about how a space will actually feel and function once it’s finished, because that’s where the thinking began.
That’s not a criticism of building-first design and build companies. It’s simply a different starting point, and it produces a different kind of project. We think starting with design produces a better one, but we’d rather you judge that for yourself once you’ve seen how the process actually runs.
Returning to the Name Built on This Difference
Stevens Design & Build is the name Kevin spent years building his reputation on, long before any rebrand or change of direction. Returning to it wasn’t about starting something new. It was about going back to the identity that always represented this business best: design-led, personally run and built the other way round from most of the competition.
